Dry taps for Harare as COH cuts off water for repairs

Bridget Mabanda

Several parts of Harare will be without water over different days this week starting today, (Wednesday), the City of Harare has announced.

In a notice, the municipal authorties advised that a total shutdown of two lines servicing Letombo is planned from 1600hrs today (Wednesday) to 1600hours February 2, 2023.

The works at Letombo will affect Willowvale, Highfield, parts of Mbare, Sunningdale, Msasa, Hatfield, Craneborne, Arcadia, Houghton Park, Southerton, Harare Hospital, Waterfalls, Graniteside, Hillside, parts of Eastlea and surrounding areas.

Another shutdown will be effected on February 4 at 1600hrs to February 5, 1600 hours on three Alex Park lines.

Areas that will be affected include the Central Business District, Milton Park, Westlea, Warren Park, Tynwald, Bluffhill, Malbereign, Haig Park, Sentosa, Westgate, Alex Park and surrounding areas.

The council said that the shutdowns are being carried out to allow repairs at the 750mm pumping mains near Houghton Park, an air valve at AFM Warren Park and within Warren Control largely to reduce water losses.

The city loses millions of mega litres of treated water annually through leakages mostly owing to a worn out distribution system that was designed to serve a small fraction of the current Harare population.
