A man with US$65 000 cash in his car was left empty handed after his passenger, on arriving at his destination at Banket Shopping Centre Bus Stop, picked the bag with the money and ran off into the bush.

The incident happened this past Sunday, January 29.

“The complainant had offered a lift to Jey Mushati from Harare to Banket. After reaching his destination, Jey Mushati stole the money which was stashed in a bag in the boot of the complainant’s vehicle, before running away in the bush,” said the police in a statement.

But Mushati, 33, was not fated to enjoy his ill-gotten windfall alone as other opportunists quickly jumped in for their share.

Tongai Talent Mupatutsa, 38, Osborne Mutemachani, 40, and Tendai Kapita, 37 followed Mushati into the bush and appointed themselves shareholders of the stolen holdings.

Mushati treated himself to a Mercedes Benz, registration number AFC 3071.

His newfound affluence came to an abrupt end within days when police arrested him and the three beneficiaries of his grab and run career.

Police recovered US$37 907 cash and the vehicle.

The police urged people to stop setting themselves up as targets:

“We continue to appeal to members of the public to desist from carrying large sums of money as they will likely fall prey to criminals.”
