The United Nations Resident and Humanitarian Coordinator in Zimbabwe, Ambassador Edward Kallon, has applauded the Teen Rescue Mission (TRM) for their continued efforts to help vulnerable teenagers to shun drug abuse.
The matter was addressed during a recent meeting at the UN head office in Harare during which TRM presented an album that is set to be released on February 18 which encourages teenagers to desist from using drugs to avoid early pregnancies.
Mr Kallon spoke much on giving out to save the youths against all vices that try to destroy their lives and also on protection of the girl child which Teen Rescue Mission is driving.
“It is of great sadness to note how young people are getting their life in danger by taking these substances. Having an organisation like yours, which has devoted itself to save the youths, is of great importance and we applaud these efforts. Youths will indeed have quality health in line with SDG3,” Mr. Kallon said.
He said the UN will continue to support the mission to ensure that young people have quality health following the sudden surge in drug abuse in the country.
Teen Rescue Mission director Abraham Matuka said the organisation will continue to fight drugs and substance abuse in teens and youths.
“As a youth I stand to present the issues that are driving most of us into drugs and substance abuse and early pregnancies.
“Peer pressure and idleness resulting in mental health is of great concern.
“Young people nowadays have no one to speak to, parents are busy looking for money and at the end of the day they are losing their children to social media and other things,” he said.
He also said that TRM is coming in to fill in the gap which has been created in the society as a result of poverty most people are facing.
