Gold Star, a subsidiary of StarAfrica Corporation Limited announced that they have temporarily suspended the Harare refinery and sent workers on an indefinite leave due to price increase by Tongaat Huletts.
In a statement, StarAfrica commercial executive Revesai Gwenhamo said the price increase by their supplier makes it challenging for them to sell at a competitive and viable price.
“We are writing to advise that we have closed the Gold Star Sugars Harare Refinery with effect from Monday, 13 February, 2013 until further notice.
“The closure is a result of a raw sugar price increase taken by our supplier on February 9, which makes it difficult for the company to produce and sell refined sugar.
“We have engaged the supplier and look forward to finding an amicable solution to enable us to resume operations as soon as possible,” reads the statement.
Gold Star added that the onerous trading terms have constrained raw sugar supplies to the refinery.
StarAfrica Corporation Limited is an established sugar refinery in Zimbabwe; manufacturing and marketing sugar-based products under two well-known brand names, Goldstar Sugar and Country Choice Foods.
