The Zimbabwe Republic Police arrested 271 people on February 20, bringing the cumulative arrests to 565 throughout the country under the operation lunched to enforce route permits and time tables.
The police launched the operation to enforce compliance with route permits and timetables by long distance bus drivers to mitigate against accidents on the country’s roads.
The violation of routes, police said, results in drivers being pushed into dangerous driving and misbehaving with passengers, causing road traffic accidents in some instances.
“In a bid to ensure compliance with road traffic rules and regulations by public service vehicles, the ZRP will with immediate effect heighten enforcement on compliance with route permits and timetables.
“Owners of public service vehicles are therefore advised to adhere to the dictates of their route permits and timetables forthwith,” police said.
Zimbabwe Passenger Association president, Tafadzwa Golitati, said that police should also intensify their operation against illegal pirate taxis, especially during the night.
“Harare Commuters are facing transport challenges and end up being robbed by errant pirate transporters. There is a need to upbuild passenger vehicle services,” he said.
