A Ruwa man who insured an already damaged car and staged a road accident claiming US$66 059 32 for insurance has been arraigned to court.
Never Makova, 50, of Damofalls, Ruwa, was at the Harare Magistrates'Court charged with fraud, alternatively contravening Section 136(a) (b) of the Criminal Law Codification and Reform Act, Chapter 9:23.
Makova used to work for AMG Global as a manager responsible for motor vehicle fleet management. His duties, among others, included placing AMG Global vehicles on insurance policies and making sure that they are renewed from time to time.
Complainant is Alliance Insurance Private Limited which is into motor vehicle, property and life insurance.
The State, through Zebediah Bofu, alleges that on May 5, 2021, the Zimbabwe Insurance Brokers invited AMG Global Chartered Accountants Zimbabwe’s motor vehicle fleet policy through Makova via email.
Working with the late Albert Kaseke of Fineye Panel Beaters, Makova took advantage of the request and added a non-AMG Global Chartered Accountant Zimbabwe vehicle, a Toyota Fortuner.
He insured the car with Alliance Insurance Private Limited for US$55 000.
On October 22, 2021, Makova and Kaseke made up a claim through Zimbabwe Insurance Brokers.
They stated that on October 19, 2021 at around 1950 hours, Charles Machawiri had had an accident while driving the Toyota Fortuner at Juru turn-off, the second party being Ebban Nyuke who was driving an unregistered Toyota Hilux.
Makova quoted ZRP Murehwa, Juru Traffic and used a counterfeit date stamp to authenticate the claim document.
He obtained quotations from Cedric Jonker Spraypaints, Fineye panel beaters, Jock Smith Spray Paints and Floyd Enterprises and went to raise a fictitious third party confirmation of insurance cover from Clarion Insurance Company on the Toyota Hilux and attached them to the claim documents.
According to the state, Makova insured an already damaged vehicle and staged a road accident before claiming US$66 059 32 and nothing was recovered.
Mangosi ordered Makova to appear in court on May 22, 2023 for routine remand.
