Police last night said that no fatalities had been confirmed at the multi-vehicle crash along the Masvingo-Beitbridge highway near Chivi turn-off yesterday afternoon.
“Our officers are at the scene. Efforts to put out the fire are still ongoing. The accident involved two haulage trucks and we are yet to confirm any fatalities,” said police spokesperson Ass Comm Paul Nyathi.
He said the police would release full details in due course.
This comes after a video shared on social media claimed multiple fatalities, possibly running into double figures.
The video shared on social media shows two haulage trucks, and two smaller vehicles with the narrator claiming that there were two other smaller vehicles caught up in the inferno, bringing the total to six.
While one voice suggest that one vehicle could be a Toyota Platz the narrator claims that passengers from two Toyota Wish vehicles did not manage to escape as the vehicles burst into flame on impact.
The Toyota Wish is a popular with pirate transporters known as mushikashika as it can be overloaded to carry 12 or more adults. With children on board the figures go up.
Thus the total number of fatalities could be staggering if indeed there were two such vehicles caught up in the crash.
Conflicting reports say there was no Toyota Wish involved and the smaller vehicles were a Nissan Almera and a Honda Fit.
Zim Now was unable to ascertain the number of the condition of survivors who were reportedly taken to Masvingo General Hospital.
