The Portfolio Committee on Primary and Secondary Education has raised concern over high school dropout rates, revealing that 49,555 learners left school in 2024, highlighting challenges in access and retention.

Speaking on behalf of the Committee, Supa Mandiwanzira noted that the shortage of learning facilities remains a major obstacle. “An estimated 2,000 additional schools are required across the country to meet growing demand,” he said, emphasizing the urgent need for infrastructure expansion.

The Committee identified inadequate school facilities, long distances to schools, and economic hardships as key factors contributing to the dropout rate. Mandiwanzira stressed that “increased investment in education infrastructure” is essential to ensure that every child can exercise their right to quality and inclusive education.
