A 26-year-old man from Fort Rixon in Matabeleland South province, Dumisani Mathuthu, was sentenced to 24 months imprisonment for three counts of  malicious damage to property, assault and threats to commit violence.

He appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Nomagugu Maphosa and pleaded guilty to the charges.

Mathuthu assaulted another man he suspected of having a relationship with his wife.

Fifteen months of the sentence were suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour and three months were also suspended on condition he restitutes the complainant of US$75.

The remaining six months were also suspended on condition that he performs 140 hours of community service at Kombo Clinic.

The court heard that on 14 June and at around 2am, Mathuthu broke into Witness Dhlamini’s bedroom using stones and damaged the door and the wall. While he was inside, he assaulted him with fists all over the body.

He then went on to threaten his pregnant wife saying that he would cut her into pieces and this instilled fear in her.

The matter was reported to the police and investigations were carried out leading to the arrest of Mathuthu.

When asked by the magistrate on why he committed the offence he said he suspected that his wife was in a relationship with Dlamini.

“I came to realise that there was a possibility that my wife had fallen in love with Dhlamini and this agitated me,” Mathuthu said.
