Bulawayo residents have implored the city council to avail public toilets in the Central Business District as a way of limiting he spread of diseases such as cholera since people relieve themselves in alleyways.
This comes in the wake of a call by the Bulawayo City Council on the business community to provide ablution facilities for their clients.
However, residents have argued that the local authority still has to take care of vendors, street children, vagabonds, shoppers and those that would be looking for work in town who also should be catered for.
“How many public toilets are situated between 15th Avenue and 8th Avenue, and where are they situated within the stated boundaries? Human traffic has so much increased within the CBD and with that in mind, humans tend to do the unexpected when nature calls.

Bulawayo Progressive Residents Association secretary for administration, Thembelani Dube said council should adapt to the growth of the city.
“When the city was planned the toilets matched the population but as the city is developing there is a need to equally adapt to the changes and have more facilities that match what is on the ground and be realistic with that issue. City planning should not be static so there is a need for adaptation and flexibility. In the meantime, as they plan for additional toilets, they can make use of mobile toilets in some areas to assist the people,” said Dube.
