The Zimbabwe National Boxing and Wrestling Control Board Chief Executive Officer, Lawrence Zimbudzana, has been suspended for alleged acts of misconduct.

ZNBWCB chairperson Vee Chibanda announced in a notice that the suspension is with effect from July 6. She, however, did not specify the misconduct associated with the CEO’s relief of duties, but indicated investigations were in progress.

“The public shall be advised of the next steps to be taken once investigations are complete.

“During Mr. Zimbudzana's suspension, the Board has appointed an acting CEO to oversee the operations and management of the organization. Mrs. Priscila Kadungure will be the Acting Chief Executive Officer.

“This temporary appointment will ensure continuity and uninterrupted service to the athletes, stakeholders, and the public.

“The ZNBWCB remains committed to promoting and supporting the development of boxing and wrestling in Zimbabwe.

“The organization will continue its work to regulate these sport codes, provide opportunities for athletes, and contribute to their growth and success on both national and international levels,” Chibanda said in the notice.

Zimbudzana was conspicuous by his absence during the historic visit to Zimbabwe by boxing luminary Floyd Mayweather Jnr, this despite his having earlier been involved in the meetings around “The Motherland Tour”.

During his time at the helm of the administration of the sport, Zimbabwe has scored a number of positives that have seen boxing’s general rating soar at both local and regional stages.

Apart from hosting numerous successful professional tournaments domestically and helping to facilitate for the emergence of a second World Boxing Council champion in Kudakwashe Chiwandire, the country has been appointed to the executive board of the African Boxing Union together with Tunisia, South Africa, Uganda, Malawi, Mali, Nigeria and Zambia.

The recognition followed the successful hosting of a WBC training seminar for referees and judges and the ABU annual Convention held in Victoria Falls in July last year.

“It’s actually a show of confidence in the country in terms of our capacity to help the development of boxing at that particular level. I hope that it will be quite beneficial to the country as we will always be getting firsthand information in terms of developments that will be happening at that level.

“We will also make sure that the country also benefits in terms of other capacity development programmes. We are also committed to play a role in the development of this particular sport internationally,” Zimbudzana said then.

He holds qualifications in Physical Education and Sport and an MBA in Entrepreneurial Management.
