The Chronicle - Breaking news

The Zimbabwe Republic Police has confirmed they have arrested 12 suspects in connection with the violence that occurred at Barbourfields Stadium during a Castle Lager Premier Soccer League match between Highlanders and Dynamos.

In a statement, National Police Spokesperson Assistant Commissioner Paul Nyathi said two of the suspects were arrested for contravening the Firearms Act, four were arrested for criminal nuisance while six others were arrested for public violence.

“The Zimbabwe Republic Police confirms that 12 suspects have been arrested in connection with the public violence which occurred at Babourfields Stadium on 10th September 2023.

“The ZRP assures the public that full-scale investigations are in progress to account for all suspects who were involved in the violence,” Assistant Commissioner Nyathi said.

The incident, which took place last Sunday, was abruptly stopped due to safety concerns with Dynamos leading 2-0.

The match ended after 38 minutes when Highlanders fans threw objects and invaded the pitch leading to a clash between the fans and the police.

Eight individuals sustained injuries. They have, however, since received medical treatment and are reported to be in stable condition.
