A boat captain and three passengers drowned in Lake Kariba after the boat they were travelling in capsized and sank last Saturday afternoon.

Sources attributed the tragedy to an overload with a local camp resident, Memory Sambureni, saying it occurred between Nyaodza fishing camp and Wafawafa.

“The boat was heading towards Wafawafa carrying five people and one fisherman survived, while the other four are feared dead,” Sambureni said. “The fifth passenger who was said to have been wearing a life jacket survived after swimming to safety.”

Department of Water and Inland Lake captain Adan Nyekete confirmed the accident saying investigations were underway.

“I have received information pertaining to the accident and our team is now on the ground. We will furnish you with details after investigations,” Nyekete said.

Zimbabwe Parks and Wildlife Management Authority spokesperson Tinashe Farawo also confirmed the accident describing it as unfortunate.

“A small motorised boat capsized on Lake Kariba and four people are missing and automatically feared dead. One person was rescued by fishermen after being found clutching on a 20-litre container. The rescue teams are currently on the ground,” he said.

In 2021, five people died after a boat carrying eight people capsized on its way from Nyaodza to Lake Harvest habour.
