A Chinese national, who allegedly defrauded Sunny Yiteng Tiles Company of ZAR2 677 070.54 and was caught trying to jump from first floor in an attempt to flee, has appeared in court.
Hu Dong, 42, of South Africa, appeared before magistrate Marehwanazvo Gofa charged with fraud.
He was ordered to appear today for bail application.
The complainant in this matter is Sunny Yiteng Tiles Company based in Norton.
The State, through prosecutor Pardon Dziva, alleges that on June 17, 2022, Dong came to Zimbabwe and allegedly lied to Sunny Yiteng Tiles that he was able to pay for floor tiles equivalent to the value of ZAR1 007 224 and was given the tiles which were delivered to an unknown destination in South Africa.
It is alleged that, he then sent a fake proof of payment to the company, claiming that he had transferred the money from his South African Standard Bank account into the company's Ecobank account.
On August 24, 2022, Dong used a similar method of operation and was given floor tiles worth ZAR649 952 which he delivered again to an unknown destination in South Africa.

On November 28, 2022, Dong used a similar method and was given floor tiles worth ZAR1 019 884.54 which he delivered to unknown destination in South Africa.
He once again sent a fake proof of payment to Sunny Yiteng Tiles Company, claiming he had transferred R1 019 884.54 to them.
On October 17, 2023, Dong, went to company's premises intending to use a similar tactic and ordered floor tiles worth US$45 000.00.
It had already been discovered that he had used fake proofs of payment in doing his business.
When he was confronted about the issue, he promised to address it and was offered accommodation at the company premise.
In a bid to escape from the company, Dong joined some sheets from the first floor building where he was accommodated and attempted to escape through the window but was arrested by alert security guards after a struggle as he was very aggressive to the security personnel.
