Government has informed members of the Premier Medical Aid Society of a special general meeting scheduled for the end of November.

Health and Child Care Ministry Permanent Secretary, Dr Aspect Maunganidze, said in a statement that the decision has been made in accordance with the law.

“Secretary for Health and Child Care, as the regulator of Medical Aid Societies, hereby notifies, in terms of Section 26 of Statutory Instrument 330 of 2000, Medical Services (Medical Aid Societies) Regulations, that a PSMAS Special General Meeting will be held on November 30, 2023, at 9am, at Harare International Conference Centre, Rainbow Towers Hotel, in Harare,” reads part of the communique.

“The purpose of the Special General Meeting is to appoint an interim manager for PSMAS, which he has declared a defaulting medical aid society. By means of this notice, notification is made to all members of Premier Service Medical Aid.”

Zimbabwe’s largest medical aid society by subscription base, PSMAS has been going through though times in the last couple of years, often falling to arrears in the payment of staff salaries.

So bad was the situation that its subsidiary, the Premier Service Medical Investments has at some point been forced to close its clinics, owing to the shortage of drugs at the medical facilities.

Government has on several occasions been forced to bail out PSMAS, pumping in money to help the medical aid society remain operational.
