22 killed in head-on accident along Byo-Beitbridge highway

At least 22 people were killed while two are badly injured in a road traffic accident which occurred yesterday evening at the 27 kilometre peg, near Thandweni Store along the Bulawayo-Beitbridge highway in which a Toyota Quantum carrying 21 passengers on board was involved in a head-on collision with a DAF truck.

Police confirmed the accident on X wall.

“The ZRP reports a fatal road traffic accident which occurred on 14/11/23 at around 2200 hours at the 27 kilometre peg along Bulawayo-Beitbridge Road near Thandweni Store in which 22 people were killed whilst two others were injured when a Toyota Quantum vehicle with 21 passengers on board was involved in a head on collision with a DAF truck with one passenger on board.”

There were no survivors from the Toyota Quantum, according to the police, who said its driver also died in the crash.

The two injured victims, who were from the DAF truck, are admitted at United Bulawayo Group of Hospitals.

Meanwhile in Harare, police are appealing for information which may assist to locate family members of 37-year-old Innocent Mlambo, who died on October 11 after being run over by a City of Harare front-end loader while sleeping at a dump site at corner Bute and Harare streets in the capital.

Mlambo’s body is at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals mortuary. The victim’s mother is Hedwig Dube.
