Mbira musician, Dinnas Kamushinda and his group, the Massive Mbira Ites, is on Saturday set to mesmerise audiences at Pfukwa Night Club at Warren Park D Shops in Harare.

Speaking on his performance at Warren Park D where he will be supported by the Pfukwa Jazz Band, Kamushinda said he is promising his fans a night to remember.

In an interview with Zim Now, the mbira musician promised music lovers a great night. “I am promising fireworks, real fireworks with the Massive Mbira Ites. It is not going to be child’s play but serious business.

“We play the mbira differently. Unlike many mbira players who play it in the same way, using the same beat, we have tried to inculcate skills from our respective talents. We cannot remain with the same beat. Yes, we got the mbira with its beats at some point but we have to move on and show our own creativity within the mbira music genre.

Hatingarambi tichitevedzera vana gwenyambira vekare. (We have to be innovative and bring in a new beat with the same instrument.) So, we are urging our fans to come in their numbers to see and hear the mbira we are playing today,” Kamushinda told Zim Now, adding that their next destination will be Katanga Beerhall in St Mary’s, Chitungwiza.

Kamushinda also fronts the Zambezi Nyau Club, a Chitungwiza-based nyau outfit, with which he has travelled across a number of provinces, where the culture is practised, for competitions.

In a recent interview with this publication, Kamushinda said he is at home with the mbira instrument and plans to release another album this month.

Kumbira ndokubasa (Mbira is my real work). I play with the Massive Mbira Ites. So far, I have one album, a 12-track project under my belt and it is titled Ndangariro. I am currently working on another that should be released by end of December,” said Kamushinda.

“In terms of beat, at times we exclusively play the mbira although this is fused with guitars here and there,”

“My family is very supportive of what I do and they understand that I have to be in many places with my creative work. I have two kids from my current marriage and two other children from a previous marriage.

“I hope to surpass whatever level I am on currently. I would want to do better. In fact, I would want to show people how talent works,” said Kamushinda.
