2 years in SA prison for cigarrette smuggling

A Zimbabwean man will serve two years in a South African prison after being convicted of smuggling cigarettes into that country or pay a fine of R300 000.

Limpopo police spokesperson Brigadier Hlulani Mashaba confirmed that Max Chingachirere, 48, was convicted at the Polokwane Specialised Commercial Crimes Court for smuggling cigarettes worth R416 070 into South Africa.

Chingachirere was arrested on September 22 in Roedtan after police discovered undeclared cigarettes in his vehicle.

Chingachirere was also fine six months in prison for violation of the Immigration Act with an option to pay a fine of R5 000.

Earlier in the year another Zimbabwean, Oliver Mupanga,  45 was jailed for an effective five years in South Africa for smuggling a cigarettes worth over R300 000.

Smuggling of cigarettes from Zimbabwe to South Africa is a multi-million dollar industry with most of the contraband siphoned out through Beitbridge.

Security forces from both countries have been implicated as enablers of smuggling with South Africa arresting two policeman in Mupanga’s case.
