A Gokwe man is set to lose 81 goats to destruction by the Department of Veterinary Services after he transported them from one area to another without clearance.

The goats were on October 19 intercepted at a road block in Selous, Chegutu district, while on their way from Karombo Village, Chief Chireya’s area in Gokwe. It is labelled a high-risk foot and mouth disease area.

Although the owner of the livestock, Masiya Mateyaunga, was in possession of a police clearance, he did not have a veterinary movement permit.

The Chief Director in the Vet Department, Dr J. Nyika, in a memo advised the provincial veterinary officer to kill and dispose of all the goats. The correspondence was copied to the anti-stock theft unit national co-ordinator and the Zimbabwe Republic Police provincial office.

“Under and by virtue of powers invested in the Director of Veterinary Services by Section 7, sub-section (3) paragraph (a) of the Animal Health Act (Chapter 1901) and as read with Section 7, the Director orders the destruction of the 81 goats and safe disposal of the carcasses. The destruction and disposal must be witnessed by police details,” wrote Dr Nyika.
