The Grain Millers Association of Zimbabwe has revealed that local milling companies’ logistical challenges in delivering the country’s staple have since been resolved, easing the panic that had gripped the general public.
This comes as there has been a shortage of maize-meal in retail and wholesale shops, with supermarkets in Harare and the northern parts of the country facing stock-outs.
Ths was said by the chairman of the GMAZ, Tafadzwa Musarara while assessing the availability of the country’s staple in a tour of Harare’s retail outlets.
Musarara said that the country has been facing shortage in maize-meal in the past weeks and these challenges have been a matter of logistics hence the public should not panic.
“… we experienced a shortage of maize-meal in both wholesale and retail shops. This was due to logistical challenges that we have been experiencing,” Musarara said.
He, however assured the general public of the availability of the staple in both formal and informal markets in the next 10 days owing to engagements with the Government and other stakeholders.
Denford Mutashu, CZR president also confirmed that supplies should improve following engagement with the government.
“However we found a solution to this problem after crowding in the government and private sector,” he said
Mutashu said after dealing with the shortages, they will now focus on overpricing and protection of consumers.
“Now that we have addressed the shortage problem, the next step is to ensure that consumers are not overpriced by unscrupulous retailers,” he added.
Industry and Commerce Minister, Dr Sithembiso Nyoni called for an all stakeholders’ meeting to prevent a catastrophe.
