The International Court of Justice has set January 11 and 12 for public hearings on the case of Israeli genocide on the Palestinian people instituted by South Africa.

In a statement, the ICJ submits that the hearings are set for January 11 and 12 at the Peace Palace in The Hague, where basis will be given to a request for the indication of provisional measures in which South Africa filed in its application for the court to indicate provisional measures in order to protect further harm on the rights of the Palestinian people.

“On Thursday 11 and Friday 12 January 2024, the International Court of Justice will hold public hearings at the Peace Palace in The Hague, the seat of the Court, in the proceedings instituted by South Africa against Israel,” the statement read.

Leading into the proclamation of these dates, South Africa had filed an application  on December 23, 2023, instituting proceedings against Israel in connection to alleged violations of the obligations under the Convention on the Prevention and Punishment of the Crime of Genocide in relation to Palestinians in the Gaza Strip.

“… South Africa asks the Court to indicate provisional measures in order to protect against further, severe and irreparable harm to the rights of the Palestinian people under the Genocide Convention and to ensure Israel’s compliance with its obligations under the Genocide convention not to engage in genocide and to prevent and to punish genocide,” the statement stated.

The public hearing will start with an oral argument from South Africa on January 11 followed by that of Israel on January 12.
