Information Permanent Secretary Mr Nick Mangwana has said media should report the Gukurahundi process up to its end and not step back once they have milked the initial sensational aspects.
“After about two months, you will lose interest. We ask you not to do that,” said Mangwana while speaking at the consultative meeting for media and chiefs being held in Bulawayo.
Mangwana said that media will have a field day in the first days of the outreach as the affected communities speak but the stories may soon become repetitive and induce reporting fatigue.
He said the media owes it to the affected people and the whole nation to keep on reporting and keep the issue central.
PS Mangwana said the purpose of the ongoing meeting is not to set a coverage agenda for but urged practitioners to report responsibly and always choosing peace and national interest while reflecting on impact.
“We should approach it in a way so that negative perceptions in communities are not inflamed,” said Mangwana.
He asked media to report fairly and constructively with due sensitivity to those sharing their stories.
Over 50 editors and reporters from across the media are attending the workshop.
