Revenue authorities take centre stage at Uneca conference: Financing Africa’s green future through domestic resources

The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa conference in Victoria Falls shifted its focus on the fifth day, highlighting the crucial role of revenue authorities in financing a sustainable future for Africa.

While green bonds and diaspora remittances have previously dominated discussions, the conference emphasised the importance of domestic resource mobilisation, with tax collection by revenue authorities playing a key role. This domestically generated revenue can be directed towards green initiatives, according to conference discussions.

“No country has developed solely on external or donor funding,” said Eunice Kamwendo, Director of the Uneca Sub-Regional Office for Southern Africa.

“This underscores the critical role of revenue authorities in stepping up and raising the necessary capital for green financing.”

Regina Chinamasa, Commissioner-General of Zimra, echoed this sentiment, stating: “Revenue authorities are committed to supporting the government’s green agenda. Through efficient tax collection and exploring innovative green taxation schemes, we can significantly contribute to financing the transition to a green economy.”
