Childline Zimbabwe has commended the court ruling finding a man guilty of selling alcohol to minors during the festive season in 2023.
The 23-year-old Mbare man, Phaeteon Mutiyaya, was sentenced to two years in prison.
He was found guilty of providing alcohol to underage children and on top of that he did not have a liquor trading license.
Childline Zimbabwe said selling alcohol to minors is a serious offense that should not go unpunished.
“We appreciate the court’s acknowledgment of the seriousness of this offense and the protection of children’s well-being.
“Selling alcohol to minors not only violates the law but also puts children at risk of harm and exploitation. Childline Zimbabwe urges the public to be vigilant and report any incidents of adults selling alcohol to minors to the authorities.
“Childline remains committed to advocating for the protection and rights of children, and we encourage everyone to prioritise the safety and well-being of minors in our communities,” the organisation said.
Mutiyaya was arrested after a video of underage children publicly drinking alcohol on Christmas Day went viral on social media, leading to a public outcry for justice and police investigations.
The minors were aged between 5 and 11.
