The free eye cataract surgeries being offered at Parirenyatwa Group of Hospitals are set to benefit over 500 people with the visual condition.

A cataract, which often results in blurred vision, is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens behind the iris and pupil.

Screening process was carried out on Friday while operations start today and will run until Friday.

Parirenyatwa Hospital spokesperson Linos Dhire said they had been overwhelmed as they had targeted 500 patients but ended up registering over 1000.

“Everything is in order, all the 500 will be operated then for the other 500, we still have to find a way because we have registered all of them.”

Dhire said they will only consider new patients after clearing the batch that has been registered.
