A man from Mhondoro-Ngezi, who allegedly pretended to be Karo Platinum Private Limited’s human resources manager and swindled people who were looking for jobs at the company, has been taken to court.
Prosper Matsveru, 33, appeared before magistrate Dennis Mangosi at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with fraud.
He was ordered to appear in court on March 26.
The complainant in this matter is Karo Platinum Private Limited.
The State, through prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu, alleges that in June 2023, Karo Platinum Private Limited discovered through the WhatsApp platform that there were scammers who were advertising attachment and learner programme vacancies, claiming to be Karo.
Karo Platinum Private Limited also received a number of applications through its human resources department email address when it had not advertised for any vacancy.
It received various complaints from aspiring employees that they were duped through the online advertisement, which was being circulated through the WhatsApp platform.
The company made its internal investigations and discovered that Matsveru was using two Econet numbers and had extended the due date for submission of applications to January 24.
On the same day, Karo Platinum Private Limited reported the matter to police after discovering that Matsveru was defrauding job seekers in its name, causing prejudice to the good administration of the company.
Investigations revealed that, Matsveru lied to aspiring applicants that he was employed as a human resources manager responsible for recruiting employees and as a result of this, Matsveru would ask applicants to deposit monies into his two Ecocash numbers towards medical examinations and other application costs.
Police also discovered that, details of the subscriber was registered in the name of Thando Gumpo, of Nkulumane 5, Bulawayo, who died on November 17, 2015, at the age of 51 years and the number is not known by the surviving spouse, Sthengeni Mpala.
Details of subscriber of the other number that Matsveru used 0776 169 343 were discovered to be belonging to him and the call history analysis revealed that he was using both lines in Turf, Mhondoro Ngezi.
On March 21, the police was informed on the whereabouts of Matsveru who was using both sim cards in Turf Growth Point, Mhondoro Ngezi and went there.
They waylaid him, leading to his arrest.
