About 55 passengers cheated death when an Inter Africa bus that was travelling from Chiredzi to Harare along the Roy-Chiredzi highway, overturned at the 30km peg near Gumbo Service Centre in Zaka in yesterday morning.
The accident occurred near Nyamukunga River, under Chief Ndanga.
The injured passengers were taken to Ndanga District Hospital.
Masvingo provincial police spokesperson, Inspector Kudakwashe Dehwa said the driver failed to negotiate a curve, a common phenomenon on this stretch of road, veered off the road before overturning.
“The accident occurred at the 30km peg along the Roy-Chiredzi Road on 27/03/24 at 02:30am, involving Mukumba bus, which was being driven by Edwin Muchina from Chiredzi to Harare with 55 passengers on board.
“Upon reaching the 30km, he failed to negotiate a curve and veered off the road to the right, overturned once and landed on its right side. 25 passengers were injured. The vehicle sustained windscreen and right side damages.”
Lately, accidents involving public service vehicles have been on the rise. Two weeks ago, Blue Circle and City buses collided head-on near Lutumba in Beitbridge, killing nine passengers on the spot.
This followed another fatal accident involving a Zimbabwean bus, Simlex, killed 13 passengers on the spot after colliding head-on with a haulage truck.
Transport and Infrastructural Development Minister, Felix Mhona has already called for a stakeholders meeting in the wake of the rising road carnage.
