The government is set to fork out a staggering US$21.6 million in the purchase of vehicles for legislators and Senators, with reports suggesting they could receive the payments in the coming weeks.
Parliament of Zimbabwe holds 280 legislators, and 80 senators, who will receive vehicles, with some already reported to be looking for quotations from car dealerships.
The vehicle budget was raised from US$55 000 to US$60 000 by the Finance Minister, Professor Mthuli Ncube after an outcry by parliamentarians to increase the vehicle budget.
Clerk of Parliament, Kennedy Chokuda, refused to comment on the matter although questions were sent to him.
“Sorry, I do not discuss issues to do with the welfare and conditions of service of Members of Parliament in the media,” Chokuda said.
