This weekend, Bulawayo will be the centre of attention for BMX enthusiasts across Africa as the city plays host to the 2024 Confederation of African Cycling BMX Championships. Busters Bicycle Park will be the battleground where riders from Zimbabwe, South Africa, Morocco, and Algeria will clash for glory and a chance to qualify for the Olympics in Paris.

Excitement is already building as riders ramp up their training for the high-stakes competition. Judah Lepar, a Zimbabwean rider, has been training relentlessly since June last year and is confident of a strong performance.

He isn't the only one with his sights set on the podium. Parker Mann, another rider, boasts a victory at last year's South Africa Championships and is hungry for another win.

Nehemiah Kitaba, another competitor, has meticulously prepared for this year’s tournament and is eager to showcase his skills.  Zimbabwean rider Joshua Changadzo emphasises the camaraderie within the sport, stating it’s “not just about winning” but also about enjoying the competition.

Buster’s Club, the local BMX club, is thrilled to be hosting this prestigious event.  Thembelihle Ndlovu, the club secretary, highlights the invaluable opportunity to learn from some of the continent’s best riders.

The competition promises to be fierce, especially in the elite category where riders will be vying for valuable Olympic qualification points. Zimbabwe will be well-represented with Hana Taylor, Helen Mitchel, Ashleigh Gore, Kudakwashe Mswaka, and Ruvimbo Mtasa competing in the women’s category.  The men’s side will see Joe Ruwoko, Simon Martin, Gaylord Kanduku, and Malone Kanduku carrying the national flag
