Two Mozambicans, Calisto Mashava, 34, and Moses Machipanda, 34, were sentenced to ten years in prison each for vandalising Zesa copper cables.
The National Prosecuting Authority of Zimbabwe confirmed in a statement that the duo from Mozambique appeared before the Mutare Magistrates’ Courts for vandalising ZETDC property meant for transmitting electricity thereby interfering with the supply of electricity to Green Valley Farm.
“On the 15th of April, 2024, the accused persons illegally crossed the border from Mozambique into Zimbabwe with the intention of stealing copper cables at Green Valley Farm in Odzi. When they got to the transformer, they threw a stone tied to a rope on the overhead cables causing a power outage.
“The complainant heard some noise coming from the transformer and alerted the farm manager, who teamed up with farm workers and they proceeded to investigate the cause,” the NPA said.
The first accused person was arrested at the scene while the second accused fled and was arrested the following day.
The NPAZ has warned members of the public that theft or vandalism of ZETDC cables attracts a mandatory sentence of ten years imprisonment.
