A bogus lawyer, who duped the complainant money after promising to represent his brother, has been nabbed.

Wesley Jena, 39, of Waterfalls, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with fraud.

He was remanded in custody to Monday for bail application.

The complainant in this matter is Dennis Mahachi, 27.

The State alleges that on April 22, at around 0900 hours at the Harare Magistrates’ Court, in Harare, the complainant’s brother, Debate Mahachi, was arrested for contravening the Exchange Control Act so he engaged the services of Jena, who introduced himself as a legal practitioner from Jena and Associates.

Dennis desperately wanted his brother to be given bail and he hired Jena who charged him US$500 for legal fees, to represent his brother on April 24, for bail application.

Dennis only had US$300 and he paid it to Jena and was not given a receipt.

On April 24, at around 0900 hours and at Harare Magistrates’ Court, Mahachi was called before the magistrate, but Jena remained seated in the court gallery, he never represented Dennis’ brother, who was remanded in custody.

Dennis was frustrated and that is when he discovered that he had been duped by Jena.

Jena also failed to produce his practicing certificate from the Law Society of Zimbabwe.

As a result, the value stolen was US$300.
