Out-of-hospital cardiac arrest is a global issue. About 350,000 people in the US and 275,000 people in Europe experience out-of-hospital cardiac arrest each year. The immediate on-site first aid provided by the first responders at the scene is the prerequisite and foundation for saving patients’ lives. However, there is a relative lack of personnel with basic first aid skills among the public in Zimbabwe.

To further promote and popularize on-site first aid knowledge and skills in Zimbabwe, Africa, and to enhance the local public’s awareness of on-site first aid, from May 6th to May 8th, the 21st China medical team in Zimbabwe traveled for 15 hours by car to Hwange, about 500 kilometers west of the capital Harare. The “First Responder” on-site first aid training program was conducted successively at the Hwange Power Station and Kamativi Mining (Private) Company Limited, providing training for nearly 500 Zimbabwean employees

The training instructors, Dr. Xu Jing, Dr. Zhang Yulong, and Dr. Chen Junpeng, conducted training on “First Responder” knowledge and emergency treatment precautions through theoretical lectures and practical demonstrations, detailed explanations of Cardiopulmonary resuscitation(CPR) and trauma first aid, and on-site demonstration teaching. Subsequently, each employee practiced CPR until fully mastered.

The captain of China medical team, Dr. Tan Jianlong said, “The success rate of out-of-hospital cardiac arrest rescue is still very low. Therefore, the 21st China(Hunan) medical team will conduct public training to popularize first aid knowledge and skills, enabling more and more first responders to master standardized and accurate first aid skills and provide on-site rescue to patients. Creating a social atmosphere of “everyone learns and practices first aid”.
