A Chitungwiza man, who was given US$10 by his friend in order to buy whiskey but never returned, has been sentenced to 15 days in prison.

Lyton John, 33, of Chitungwiza, appeared at the Harare Magistrates’ Courts before magistrate Simon Kandiyero charged with theft of trust property.

Kandiyero, in delivering his sentence told John that the 15 days was wholly suspended on condition that he pays the money to the clerk of court before May 20.

The complainant in this matter is Tozivepi Marufu, 39.

The State, through prosecutor Takudzwa Jambawu, alleges that on May 10, at Copacabana in the Harare CBD, Marufu gave John US$10 so that he could buy him a quarter Two Keys Whiskey for US$1.50 and bring back the whiskey and the change but John went away and never came back..

The court heard that Marufu started to look for John and saw him drinking beer at Star Bar and told the police, leading to his arrest.

John told the court that he was drunk.

“I was just drunk, l didn’t know the exact amount which l was given, l thought it was US$1.

“I am a tout at Julius and Robert,” he told the court.
