Mayibongwe Ngalonde, of Warrengham, was convicted of attempted murder by the Bulawayo Regional Magistrates’ Court for the attack on Mehluli Maphosa, 22.
The court heard that on August 23, 2026, at around 2000 hours, Ngalonde and Maphosa were in the kitchen near a fireplace at Plot Number 23, Warrengham, when a misunderstanding arose.
An argument followed, during which Ngalonde produced a small bottle containing petrol and poured its contents over Maphosa before setting him alight.
Maphosa sustained extensive burns to his neck, hands and stomach and was taken for medical treatment.
The matter was reported to the police, leading to Ngalonde’s arrest.
He was convicted of attempted murder and sentenced to an effective four years’ imprisonment.
