Bellarmine Chatunga Mugabe, the youngest son of former Zimbabwean president Robert Mugabe, will remain in custody after his bail application was postponed to Thursday by a Johannesburg court.

Mugabe, 28, and his co-accused, Tobias Mugabe Matonhodze (33), appeared at the Alexandra Magistrates’ Court, where proceedings were delayed to allow the defence to review outstanding documents from the State.

The two men face three charges — attempted murder, defeating the ends of justice, and unlawful possession of a firearm.

They are accused of shooting a 23-year-old gardener in the back at the Mugabe family’s Hyde Park home on 19 February. The victim, reportedly employed at the residence, sustained injuries in the incident.

Questions have also emerged regarding Mugabe’s legal status in South Africa, with uncertainty over how he entered the country.

The court is expected to hear their formal bail application on Thursday, when a decision will be made on whether they will be granted release pending trial.
