China has donated 5,000 metric tonnes of rice to Zimbabwe, reinforcing long-standing bilateral ties and providing relief to vulnerable communities.

The consignment will support the elderly, persons with disabilities, children’s homes, and those affected by natural disasters and drought.

Speaking at the handover ceremony in Harare, Ambassador Zhou Ding described the gesture as one that “embodies the warm friendship of the Chinese people” and reflects an “unwavering commitment to Zimbabwe’s food security,” particularly during times of hardship.

Receiving the donation, Minister of Public Service, Labour and Social Welfare, Edgar Moyo, expressed gratitude for the continued support, noting its significance amid ongoing climatic challenges. He assured the nation that the assistance “will be distributed in a targeted, transparent, and accountable manner,” prioritising the most vulnerable groups.

The Grain Marketing Board is expected to channel the aid through established systems to ensure fairness and minimise the risk of corruption, guaranteeing that the food reaches intended beneficiaries efficiently.
