Colombia has awarded land titles to more than 600 Indigenous families in Cauca after four decades of disputes marked by violence, assassinations, and paramilitary intimidation.

The low-key ceremony, held on Wednesday to avoid targeting by armed groups, transferred 11,000 hectares to the Nasa and Misak communities.

The move stems from a court order demanding accelerated restitution for communities dispossessed during the civil conflict.

While overshadowed internationally, human rights groups say it is one of Colombia’s most significant land rights milestones in years—especially as anti-mining militias have recently increased attacks in the region.

Community leaders called the handover “a historic moment of healing.”
