The European Union has pledged €4.3 million (over US$5 million) to support the establishment of the National Public Health Institute in Zimbabwe.

The commitment was announced during a meeting today at Kaguvi Building in Harare between Health and Child Care Minister Douglas Mombeshora, World Health Organisation delegates, and the EU.

Minister Mombeshora said the support would strengthen Zimbabwe’s health systems.

“This funding is a major boost towards our goal of setting up a fully functional National Public Health Institute, which will enhance disease surveillance, preparedness, and response.

We are grateful for the continued partnership with the EU and WHO in advancing public health in Zimbabwe,” he said.

EU representatives reaffirmed the bloc’s commitment to supporting sustainable health infrastructure in the country.

“The EU remains a strong partner in improving public health in Zimbabwe, and the National Public Health Institute will serve as a cornerstone in protecting the health of citizens,” an EU delegate said.

Meanwhile, Dr. Raiva Simbi was appointed coordinator for the Ministry of Health and Child Care, a role expected to improve efficiency and coordination in the ministry’s programmes.
