Four family members from Maora Farm in Karoi, who bashed a police officer who was carrying out his duties were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment each by the Karoi Magistrates’ Court for “Defeating or obstructing the course of justice”.

As reported by the National Prosecuting Authority, Peter Charumbira, 30, Hazvinei Charumbira, 27, Shepherd Chandafira, 30, and Eneresi Fore, 50, were arrested after they assaulted and impeded a police officer, Amos Kaitano, from conducting his duties.

It is alleged that on April 16, 2024, at Maora Farm, Kaitano spotted the first accused person, who was wanted by the police in connection with a domestic violence case.

Kaitano proceeded to inform him about his arrest and attempted to handcuff but he resisted, grabbing the police officer’s handcuffs and hitting him on the head.

It is further alleged that the three other accused persons joined the brawl and assaulted Kaitano, who sustained multiple injuries.

The four were each sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment of which four months were suspended for five years.

A further eight months were suspended on condition that they perform 280 hours of community service.
