A 29-year-old Chegutu man has been jailed for an effective four years after he was caught with nearly nine kilograms of dagga in the town’s Central Business District.

Takudzwa Nyoni of Msengezi, Chegutu, appeared before the Chegutu Magistrates’ Court and was convicted of unlawful possession of dangerous drugs.

He was sentenced to five years in prison, with one year suspended for five years on condition of good behaviour, leaving him to serve an effective four years.

The court heard that detectives received information in the early hours of August 16, 2026, that Nyoni was allegedly selling dangerous drugs in Chegutu CBD.

At around 1am, officers proceeded to Multi-Media Butchery, where they allegedly found Nyoni beside a black satchel.

The court heard that Nyoni was hurriedly opening the bag and attempting to remove items from it when police approached.

A search of the satchel allegedly led to the recovery of dagga concealed inside.

Nyoni was arrested at the scene.

The following day, August 17, the seized substance was taken to Chegutu Zimpost for official weighing.

It was confirmed that the dagga weighed 8.971kg.

The State presented evidence on the recovery and weight of the drugs before the court passed sentence.
