A Zimbabwean man has been arrested in Limpopo province, South Africa while trying to smuggle out a Toyota Land Cruiser stolen from an SA Member of Parliament.

“A 42-year-old Zimbabwean national was charged with possession of a presumed stolen motor vehicle and contravention of the Immigration Act after it was established that he was in the country illegally,” South Africa Police Services said in a statement.

“The vehicle, stolen on Thursday afternoon at a parking lot in Menlyn Mall in Pretoria, was on its way to being smuggled into Zimbabwe when the suspect was apprehended later in the evening in Lebowakgomo policing area outside Polokwane,” said SAPS.

The suspect will is expected to appear in the Polokwane magistrate's court on August 12.

Over the past 18 months, SAPS has apprehended several suspects of South African and Zimbabwean nationality driving stolen high end vehicles destined for Zimbabwe. Toyota appears to be the most favoured brand.

Some culprits have since been convicted and are serving sentences of up to six years each.
