Several supermarkets and restaurants, including prominent names in the retail sector, are under the spotlight after the Bulawayo City Council invaded stores for spoiled and expired food and confiscated it.
Some supermarkets and restaurants are reported to have been selling food unfit for human consumption to customers.
Among the culprit outlets are Pick ‘n Pay, Choppies Bellevue, Broadway Spar, Oceans Foods and TM Meikles Supermarket and the food identified and seized included meats, ice cream, cabbages, confectioneries, drinks and mealie meal.
The discovery was made during an operation targeted at food outlets under the exercise dubbed: Inyama ivela ngaphi (where did the meat come from) to curb the deteriorating standards of food hygiene in food outlets.
Councillors in the city have called for heavy penalties to be instituted on premises that are found selling expired food in order to protect the public from health risks.
