Zimbabwe has joined the prestigious International Energy Forum as a full member, marking a significant step towards addressing the country’s energy challenges and contributing to the global energy dialogue.

“Zimbabwe is pleased to join the International Energy Forum to promote dialogue with fellow members on pressing energy issues,” said Honourable Professor Mthuli Ncube, Zimbabwe’s Minister of Finance, Economic Development and Investment Promotion.

He highlighted the importance of collaboration with “top actors in the global energy market” as Zimbabwe strives to “reduce energy poverty and enhance energy security”.

The IEF, with its 73 member countries representing 90% of the global energy trade, provides a valuable platform for Zimbabwe to engage in crucial discussions. IEF Secretary General Joseph McMonigle welcomed Zimbabwe, stating, "The IEF is committed to ensuring that Zimbabwe’s and Africa’s voices are heard in the global energy dialogue.”

McMonigle emphasised the urgency of addressing energy poverty, calling it “a prerequisite for development”. He expressed the IEF’s commitment to collaborating with Zimbabwe on the energy transition, focusing on expanding the electricity grid and integrating renewable sources.

Zimbabwe’s membership in the IEF opens doors to collaboration on various fronts. The country can learn from and share best practices with other members, gain access to technical expertise and financial resources, and participate in shaping global energy policies.

This development holds immense potential for Zimbabwe, offering a pathway to address its energy challenges, secure a more stable and sustainable energy future, and contribute to the global energy conversation. As McMonigle concluded, "We look forward to collaborating with Zimbabwe on the energy transition, exploring how it can expand the electricity grid to integrate new baseload and renewable energy sources.”

With its vast mineral resources and growing energy needs, Zimbabwe’s involvement in the IEF marks a significant chapter in its energy journey. The country now has the opportunity to leverage this platform to secure a brighter energy future for its citizens and contribute to a more sustainable global energy landscape.
