Natfileds Logistics Pvt Ltd director, Effiat Kodoya of Newlands in Harare, has been taken to court accused of selling a stolen Toyota GD6.
Kodoya, 33, appeared before the Harare Magistrates’ Courts charged with fraud.
He was remanded in custody.
The State alleges that in April 2022, complainant wanted to purchase a vehicle for its manager, Blessmore Tsingozviziva and, as result, told him look for a vehicle of his choice.
Tsingozviziva approached one Exevia Maoneke of Executive Car Sales, who showed him some of the cars which were in stock and he opted for a Toyota GD6 registration number AFN 6167 and was quoted US$45 000 or the equivalent of ZWL$13 201 000.
He then went with the quotation to the complainant, who requested their security officer one Simba Chourombo to conduct due diligence with CID VTS Harare on the car.
Chourombo advised that the car was clean and gave a go-ahead for the complainant to effect payment.
The complainant did as such and paid ZW$13 201 000 to Executive Car Sales.
The complainant took over the car and went on to effect change of ownership since it was still registered in the name of Kodoya.
It is alleged that the complainant went to ZRP CID VTS for clearance but was told that the car was reported stolen in Botswana and was immediately seized by the police.
After physical inspection of the car, the chassis and engine number on the vehicle were totally different from the chassis and engine number on the vehicle documents.
Complainant engaged Executive Car Sales over the issue but was told they also had purchased the vehicle from someone else prompting the complainant to file a report with the police.
Investigations were carried out in this matter and Exevia Maoneke was interviewed and stated that he had bought the vehicle from Trevor Nyambe.
Again Nyambe was summoned and interviewed and he stated that he had bought the car from Tinashe Leonard Chitemere of ChitsAuto Car sale.
Chitemere was summoned and interviewed and stated that he had purchased the vehicle from Kodoya who is also the registered owner of the vehicle according to the registration book.
As a result, the complainant suffered an actual prejudice of ZWL$13 201 000 and nothing recovered.
