Since taking office as the Member of Parliament for Epworth North, Zivai Mhetu has gone beyond the call of duty to improve the lives of his constituents.
While serving as an MP, Mhetu has become known not only for his legislative work but also for his philanthropy. His selfless efforts in supporting people in need, especially the most vulnerable, have earned him respect and admiration from the residents of Epworth.
One of the most notable aspects of Mhetu's leadership is his dedication to helping those in crisis. Over the course of his tenure, he has personally contributed over $30,000 from his own pockets to assist residents in Epworth with basic commodities and support during tough times.
Primrose Pokeni, a resident of Epworth, spoke about her experience receiving help from Mhetu. Her family faced difficult times when her husband was incarcerated, and it was the MP who stepped in to offer support. "All I can say is our MP is not heartless at all," Pokeni shared. "We are too many here in Epworth, but he tries by all means to help us, and he is reachable and humble."
As Zimbabweans celebrate their heroes this August, they can definitely say he is a hero of the community.
Mhetu's words reflect his drive to continue serving his community. "Their best wishes from them keep opening doors for me, and as their leader, I won't be able to make everything right, but with their support, we can make it happen," he said.
His work in parliament has also been commendable. Some of the key achievements he has shared with the people of Epworth in his end of year feedback for 2024 include securing the extension of the Zimsec exam fee deadline in parliament and a commitment from the Marondera City Council to provide piped water once the necessary infrastructure is in place.
Mhetu has also facilitated the provision of medicine for the Mabazuva Clinic through the Indian Embassy and has actively pushed for the regularization of properties in the area.
In addition to his legislative duties, Mhetu worked to ensure that his constituents had access to various benefits. He successfully launched a $1month funeral policy in partnership with Old Mutual, a gesture that shows his dedication to improving the welfare of his people. His efforts also extended to road rehabilitation in the area and the establishment of Constituency Development Committees.
In 2025, Mhetu's goals remain focused on making significant improvements for Epworth North. Among his priorities are the rehabilitation of roads using Constituency Development Funds (CDF), the introduction of piped water, the electrification of schools, and ensuring that all Epworth North residents receive title deeds for their properties.
