In an interview with Zim Now, Yvette Ashburner, chairperson of the Harare Handball Association, spoke on the positive impact that handball has on the young people of Zimbabwe.
"The sport serves as a powerful tool in promoting healthy lifestyles and deterring youths from substance abuse."
She expressed her disappointment at the absence of some teams from the tournament, as they were involved in other competitions and conveyed her belief in the significance of the Sunshine City Handball Championship as the premier event of its kind in Zimbabwe.
"We were anticipating the whole of Zimbabwe to be here at the Zimbabwe's biggest tournament however we had a tournament that was in Bulawayo last week so we figured that some of the teams couldn't make it because we also have another tournament next weekend."
Wallace Dekwende, representing the tournament sponsor JB Family, expressed his company's commitment to improving the lives of young athletes through sport.
"We have passion for community and we are actually having a stride on these young kids so basically we want to try and improve their lives through sport, so handball normally is not a sport that is popular so we want to try and make it bigger so that at least we try and make these kids love the sport."
Dekwende revealed the company's vision to establish handball academies, which will serve as a springboard for the youth to pursue successful careers in the sport. His statements echoed the importance of providing opportunities for the next generation of handball players, ensuring that the sport continues to grow and thrive in Zimbabwe.
Awards and prize ceremonies have been scheduled for Wednesday at Town House because of the late finish of games.
The Sunshine City Handball Championship has been a resounding success, and the final matches proved to be an epic conclusion to an exciting tournament.
