Tymon Machope, the lanky striker from Simba Bhora, is living a dream. Just a year ago, he was tearing up the lower leagues of Zimbabwean football. Now, he finds himself rubbing shoulders with national team veterans, his name included in the Warriors squad for the upcoming World Cup qualifiers.
Machope’s journey is one of resilience. Despite starting his career in farm teams, his talent and determination never wavered. Joining Simba Bhora last season proved to be the turning point. He exploded onto the scene, bagging an impressive seven goals in just eleven appearances.
His strong physique and continued goal-scoring form in the new season (already at four goals) clearly caught the eye of interim coach, Jairos Tapera.
The call-up came as a complete shock to Machope. “I am still in shock,” he confessed, disbelief tinging his excitement. “Given my background, I never expected this.” This opportunity represents the pinnacle of his career so far, and Machope is determined to make the most of it.
A starting berth against Lesotho is his ultimate goal. He acknowledges the competition – established names like Tino Kadewere and the equally impressive Tawanda Chirewa are also vying for a spot. But Machope is undeterred. “I have nothing to lose,” he declared. “I’ve reached this far through hard work, and now I just want to be given a chance to prove myself.”
The news of his selection arrived in an unorthodox way - social media. Initially dismissing it as one of the many fake squads circulating online, it wasn’t until an official Zimbabwe Football Association call confirmed his inclusion that the shock truly settled in. “This is the best news I’ve ever heard,” he beamed.
Machope’s inclusion adds another layer of intrigue to Tapera’s attacking options. With questions lingering about the coach’s influence on squad selection, all eyes will be on how Machope fares against established names.
