Baby dumper confesses to police seven months later

A Mudzi woman who wrapped her newly-born baby and abandoned her by the roadside in Chikukwa Village, Mutoko, handed herself over to police after seven months.

The woman, Emma Kamunyu (25, appeared before Mutoko magistrate Rumbidzayi Mhandu, who slapped her with a wholly-suspended six-month jail term, on condition that she does not commit a similar offence in the next five years.

Prosecuting, Nathan Majuru told the court that on April 13 the convict wrapped her newly born baby and abandoned her by the road side.

A good Samaritan, Alice Manhambara, picked the baby and took it to the police where she filed a report.

The baby was handed over to the department of social service where she was named.
