A 55-year-old woman, a four-year-old child, and a teenager were brutally murdered in Makoni Village, Tengwe, after being attacked by a mentally ill man, the Zimbabwe Republic Police confirmed.
The incident, which occurred on 18 August 2025, saw Patrick Makufa, a mental health patient, allegedly strike Constaine Mabheka ,55, several times on the head with an axe handle, killing her instantly.
Police said Makufa then turned on Kunashe Mabheka ,4, hitting the child once on the head, before ambushing Atilda Mharadze ,19, whom he struck several times on the head with the same weapon. All three victims died on the spot.
The suspect has since been arrested.
In a statement, police expressed concern over rising cases of violent crimes involving individuals with mental health challenges, urging families and guardians to ensure that patients receive professional help and timely treatment.
“The Zimbabwe Republic Police urges the public to exercise caution, particularly when interacting with individuals with mental health challenges.
"We implore families and guardians of individuals with mental health issues to seek professional help and ensure that they receive the necessary support and treatment on time,” the ZRP said.
