Duo Jailed for Hacking Econet, Stealing US$12k Airtime

Two men who hacked Econet Wireless Zimbabwe’s computer system and sold airtime bundles worth US$12,436.52 have been jailed for their roles in the scheme.

Dumisani Mutwazi, 33, and Tanaka Tayero, 27, were convicted of hacking and unlawfully using data or devices to facilitate unauthorised access to a computer system by the Kwekwe Magistrates’ Court.

The court heard that between June 25 and July 10, 2025, the duo accessed Econet’s system and sold or supplied access codes used to obtain airtime bundles.

The scheme was uncovered on July 11, 2025, when an Econet corporate fraud specialist reviewing airtime purchases through Yomix and EcoCash noticed suspicious transaction patterns linked to the two men.
